Grimsby Town participated in wartime leagues during WW1 from 1915/6 to 1918/9 and during WW2 from 1939/40 to 1945/6.

The lack of availability of footballers meant that teams frequently had to rely on guest players in order to complete their match squads. The Mariners included a number of local league players as well as footballers who were stationed on duty in the Grimsby area, and borrowed players from teams in the vicinity for away fixtures. In total 155 footballers (who never played in league or cup matches for the club during peacetime) represented Grimsby Town during WW1 and a further 134 during WW2.
